A yurt begins in the woodland
A yurt is a round, light-filled shelter built around a timber frame. At New Leaf, we use sustainably sourced wood from our Cheshire woodland to create spaces for gathering, learning and spending time close to nature.

Whether you are imagining a yurt of your own, joining a build day, or hoping to experience one for yourself, here is a little about the tradition, structure and craft behind it.
A shelter shaped by movement
Yurts have a long history among nomadic peoples of Central Asia, including Mongolia, where the traditional dwelling is known as a ger. Their practical frame and round form suited a way of life that moved with the seasons. Today, people are drawn to yurts for their natural materials, open space and welcoming feeling of being gathered beneath one roof.

How a yurt stands
A circular lattice forms the wall. Roof poles reach inward to meet at a central crown, which holds the roof together. In traditional designs, an opening at the crown can bring in daylight and let warm air escape. Coverings and insulation vary with the setting and purpose of the yurt.

From our woodland to the frame
At New Leaf, the making begins with sustainably sourced timber from our woodland. We shape it into the components that give a yurt its strength and character, keeping the grain and hand-finished details visible. Each commission is planned around its intended use, with the frame, covering, insulation and finish agreed with you.

A space to gather, learn or stay
A yurt can welcome a workshop, gathering, quiet pause or overnight stay. Interested in commissioning one, joining a hands-on build day, or asking about yurt use for an event or woodland stay? Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll talk through the possibilities.
